Kalamata will be submitting a bid to be named European Capital of Culture for 2021. The mayor of
Kalamata, Panayiotis Nikas, unveiled his proposals on Wednesday November 6, at an official event attended by leading proponents
of the arts and business in the region of Messenia. The mayor of Kalamata stated that Kalamata “is the city where the
Greek War of independence began in 1821, and where the leaders of the revolution gathered to transmit the message that we
were throwing off the Ottoman yoke.”
Kalamata is already known as a cultural tourist destination for many years.
For instance every year, Kalamata hosts the annual International Dance Festival. Athens, Thessaloniki and Patra have served
as European Capital of Culture in 1985, 1997 and 2006 respectively.

villas just outside the historic city of Kalamata, in the south western part of the Peloponnese in Greece. The hotel will
comprise 125 rooms and suites plus up to 40 luxury residential villas, each with three, four or five bedrooms.
