Weather

The climate of Messinia is temperate with a mild winter and a cool summer. The summer in the coastal areas is cool because of the northerly winds and the sea breeze while higher temperatures are found in the upper Messinian valley.

The climate in Messinia is typical of the Mediterranean climate: mild and rainy winters, relatively warm and dry summers and, generally, extended periods of sunshine throughout most of the year. A great variety of climate subtypes, always within the Mediterranean climate frame, are encountered in several regions of the Peloponnese. This is due to the influence of topography (great mountain chains) on the air masses coming from the moisture sources of the central Mediterranean Sea.

In climatological terms, the year can be broadly subdivided into two main seasons: The cold and rainy period lasting from mid-October until the end of March, and the warm and dry season lasting from April until September.

During the first period the coldest months are January and February, with, a mean minimum temperature ranging, on average, between 5 -10 degrees Celsius near the coasts and 0 - 5 Celsius over the mainland. Long stretches of consecutive rainy days are infrequent in Greece, even during the winter, and the sky does not remain cloudy for more than a few days in a row, as it does in other regions of the world.
During the warm and dry period the weather is usually stable, the sky is clear, the sun is bright and there is generally no rainfall. There are, however, infrequent and brief intervals of rapid rain or thunderstorms. The warmest period occurs during the last ten days of July and the first ten days of August, when the mean maximum temperature lies around 30 degrees Celsius. During the warm period the high temperatures are tempered by fresh sea breezes in the coastal areas.

Humidity

The relative humidity of the air is high in the coastal areas but it is reduced when moving towards the mainland, reaching rates higher than 80 points on the hydrometric scale during the winter months and lower during July and August. Average temperatures range from 13°C to 19°C on annual basis. The valleys as well as the coastal areas maintain temperatures of between 17°C and 21°C in winter due to the warm and humid southerly winds while the areas, which are not affected by the sea, maintain temperatures below 16°C.

Rainfall

Sunshine prevails upon cloudy weather but rainfall can be heavy along the west (Ionian) coast and along the west slopes of Taygetos with average annual rainfall of between 800-1500 mm. The annual course of rainfall shows most of the rain in December and May due to the thermal storms and the least in July. Snow is rare and only on the higher of the mountain peaks of Taygetos while the intensity of the winds is low and the winds are mostly northerly - north - westerly in the mainland and southerly - south westerly in the coastal areas.
