Costa Navarino, the prime sustainable destination located in the Greek region of Messinia, southwest Peloponnese, has been awarded first place in the “Destination” category at the prestigious Tourism for Tomorrow Awards 2014. The Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, established by the World Travel and Tourism Council, recognise the most effective sustainable tourism efforts across the world, with the win acknowledging Costa Navarino as the global leader in the field.
Costa Navarino was selected amongst entries from 56 countries. Following an extensive evaluation process and on-site visit, the awards were announced yesterday during a high-profile ceremony in Hainan, China, part of the WTTC’s Global Summit. The annual summit’s keynote speaker was former Secretary-General of the UN, Mr. Kofi Annan, and it is attended by government representatives and more than 700 leading figures, addressing current issues of the tourism industry. The mayor of Kalamata, Panayiotis Nikas, unveiled his proposals last November at an official event attended by leading proponents of the arts and business in the region of Messenia. The mayor of Kalamata stated that Kalamata “is the city where the Greek War of independence began in 1821, and where the leaders of the revolution gathered to transmit the message that we were throwing off the Ottoman yoke.” Three other Greek cities (Athens, Thessaloniki and Patra) have served as European Capital of Culture in 1985, 1997 and 2006 respectively. Grace Hotel Kalamata Opening 2017 Grace Hotels has announced plans for a new hotel development including residential villas just outside the historic city of Kalamata, in the south western part of the Peloponnese in Greece. The hotel will comprise 125 rooms and suites plus up to 40 luxury residential villas, each with three, four or five bedrooms.
As with all Grace properties, the design will reflect the group's philosophy of elegance and simplicity, while being sympathetic to the locality. The hotel will feature multiple restaurants; two bars; a state-of-the-art spa and wellness centre; conference facilities; water sports and children's facilities. Located on the beautiful sandy Velika beach with 300 metres of secluded beachfront, Grace Kalamata will be approximately 20 kilometres west of Kalamata in an area known for its outstanding natural beauty.
